Dry Body Brushing - Everything You Need to Know!

Although dry brushing seems to have only just risen in popularity, dry brushing is a type of Ayurvedic medicine that has been around for centuries.

Ayurveda is based on the concept that good health depends on a strong balance between mind, body, and spirit. It is a healing system that originated in India thousands of years ago.

What is Dry Brushing?

Dry brushing is a technique that involves massaging the skin with a dry, firm bristled brush. The coarse fibres of the brush help to remove dead skin from the body and improve the skin's ability to eliminate toxins through the pores.

Benefits of Dry Brushing

Detoxifying

The act of dry brushing can help to detoxify the skin and body by improving blood circulation and promoting lymphatic drainage. This can also help to reduce the appearance of cellulite, by giving the skin a tighter and more firm appearance.

The dry bristles on the brush are also said to stimulate the pores which make the body sweat easier, which in turn reduces the number of toxins flowing through the lymphatic system.

Exfoliating

The dry bristles will also brush away dry and dead skin cells which will leave your skin feeling softer.

Relaxing

Dry brushing can also be compared to massage, which may leave you feeling relaxed. Take your time with dry brushing and let the brush relieve tension in the body.

How to Dry Brush Your Skin

1) The best time to dry brush is just before a shower, as after you have done so, you can wash away the residue of dead skin cells.

2) Starting at the feet and moving up your body, use wide, circular motions.

3) You should avoid any areas which could become easily irritated, for example, if you have eczema, psoriasis or any open wounds.

4) Use light pressure where the skin is thin, and a heavier pressure where the skin is thicker, for example, the soles of the feet.

5) After cleansing the body in the shower, moisturise to keep your skin hydrated.

Dry Brush Maintenance

Dry Brush Hanging Up

Clean your brush once a week using soap and water, then leave to dry in a sunny area to prevent mildew. Drying in an open area will also help to maintain the brush's look and integrity.

You should also avoid sharing your dry brush with another person as this could lead to infection. You can get yours by clicking here
