What is Niacinamide and What Does it Do? | Kokoa Eco Beauty
niacinamide

Niacinamide is one of the most talked about skincare ingredient to date, witha 500% increase in searches over the last year alone! But what is it and why is it so great for my skin?

What is Niacinamide?

Niacinamide is an amide of Vitamin B3 - amides are derivatives of carboxylic acids. It is a hydrophilic substance that contains antipruritic, antimicrobial, photo-protective and lightening effects depending on its concentration.

It is commonly used in the cosmetics industry for its amazing topical benefits.

How Does Niacinamide Work?

Typically, Niacinamide is made from Niacin within the body. When this Niacin is taken in amounts greater than what is needed by the body, it is converted to Niacinamide.

Niacinamide is essential for the proper function of sugars and fats in the body and to maintain healthy cells.

It can help build proteins in the skin and lock in moisture to prevent environmental damage, resulting in stronger, healthier skin!

What Does Niacinamide Do when used topically?

Let's look at what Niacinamide actually does when applied to the skin, and why it is such a popular ingredient.

Reduces Redness

- It has been clinically proven to reduce skin redness and improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation.

Reduces Acne

- Evidence shows that topical application of niacinamide can help to reduce the appearance of acne and breakouts.

Strengthens Skin

- Niacinamide can keep your skin strong and healthy by producing keratin which is a type of protein.

Anti-inflammatory

- Contains anti-inflammatory properties, meaning it may improve acne through anti-inflammatory action and by reducing sebum.

Hydrates Skin

- Can hydrate the skin by improving the skin barrier function by decreasing water loss through the outer skin layer (also known as the epidermis). It can help your skin grow a lipid barrier, which helps your skin to retain moisture.

Reduces Fine Lines

- In a study, Niacinamide has been clinically proven to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
