People in the northern Indian state of Punjab are reacting with awe at the sight of the Himalayan mountain range, which is now visible from more than 100 miles away due to the reduction in air pollution caused by the country's coronavirus lockdown."
In total, 85 cities across India saw less air pollution in the first week of the nationwide lockdown.
In the UK, Air Quality News analysis of the first few days of lockdown suggests that NO2 emissions have been cut by as much as 50%, and it’s dropped even further in the weeks since. The concluded that "Whilst it has taken a worldwide pandemic to bring about this change, it does show that air pollution can be cleaned up with haste if the will is there to do so."
It is warming to see such positive impacts during this time. It is humbling to reflect and look at the positive aspects of the coronavirus. Wouldn't it be great if we use these lessons to guide us post lockdown? Perhaps working with, and preserving our wonderous natural planet will help us all in the long run? Our air and water are cleaner, there is less waste and people are valuing one another more than ever!
