No doubt you’ve heard the expression ‘through rose-tinted lenses’ when viewing something with optimism. But when it comes to rosewater, pink-hued glasses or not, the benefits of it on the skin are still clear as day! So what exactly are the benefits of rosewater, and how can you incorporate the product into your skincare routine?
First up - what is rosewater?
Rosewater is what it says on the tin: floral water made from the steeping of rose petals in water. Throughout history, it's been a staple in various areas of life; food, medicines, skincare, and cosmetics. But what is it about rosewater that makes it so popular?
1. Sorting the pH see-saw
All skin is naturally slightly acidic; with a pH of 4.5 to 5.5, but most skincare cleansers tend to have an alkaline pH, usually 6.0 to 7.5. Rosewater, on the other hand, has a pH of 5.5, which helps to rebalance the pH of the skin after cleansing.
By balancing pH, rosewater helps calm and soothe skin, preventing the irritation and inflammation of existing skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, psoriasis, and wrinkles!
2. Hydration station
Rosewater is naturally effective at nourishing and refreshing skin. When utilised in a mist form, for example, it's been proven effective in hydrating the outermost layer of skin, improving skin barrier function and reducing transdermal water loss. What’s more, rosewater contains a plentiful list of antioxidants including vitamins A, C, E, and flavonoids. These properties mean that rosewater can effectively contribute to the reductions of wrinkles and age spots. Making skin look and feel radiant and hydrated.
3. Toning power
Alongside all its antioxidants, rosewater is naturally brimming with tannins (a type of astringent), enabling it to have a tightening effect on the skin; drying out oil and tightening pores, without being as drying on the skin as alcohol-based astringents.
4. Stop and smell the roses. No, really!
After incorporating rosewater into your skincare regime and reaping all the benefits, your skin should be smelling pretty amazing! But it doesn’t end there; rose fragrance has been proven to relax you; sending calming signals to the brain, and helping to promote a good night's sleep!
So how can I incorporate rosewater into my routine?
Why not try starting your day by using rosewater as a toner after your cleansing step, either by using a cotton pad to wipe it over your face or by spritzing it directly onto your skin. You could even use a rosewater spray to lightly mist your face throughout the day, with or without makeup, to give your skin a refreshed, dewy glow. Try out our O
