What is a Toner?

What is a Toner? | Kokoa Eco Beauty

What is a toner?

A facial toner can make an appearance into your skincare routine after washing your face, but before moisturising - the simple but effective ‘in between skincare step’.

Your pores can become clogged with makeup, oil, dirt and other impurities. Toners, such as Rosewater are particularly beneficial for reducing the appearance of pores by getting rid of any excess dirt on your face after washing.

Not everyone is aware of how fab toners really are. We know that spraying water infused with roses onto our faces sounds lovely, but why is it so beneficial?

What does a toner do?

1. Removes Impurities

Using a toner after you wash your face can remove any makeup residue, dirt, oil or other impurities embedded in your pores.

2. Reduces the appearance of pores

It goes that extra mile to clean out and tighten pores, reducing the absorption of impurities and environmental contaminants into the skin. This is particularly beneficial for preventing breakouts and other skin irritations.

3. Helps maintain the pH balance of your skin

The science behind toners!

You might remember hearing about the pH scale in school, yes? Well, turns out we can apply this whole science to our faces and skincare routines.

The skin’s optimal pH level is slightly acidic, ranging from 4.7 and 5.7. The acid mantle (a mixture of sebum, sweat, and dead skin cells) is used to describe the acidic nature of your skin's surface. It acts as a barrier to bacteria and other potential contaminants that may penetrate the skin.

The skin's pH level can be disrupted when we use other products on our face. When a pH level gets disturbed, skin can become with too oily or too dry.

This is where the toner steps in.

Most toners are optimal pH level or even ever so slightly acidic to balance your skin after you you wash your face, meaning that the toner will successfully recalibrate your skin to its optimal pH level.

Clever, right?

Beauty begins with healthy skin. By allowing toner into your daily routine, you are one step closer towards a natural, glowing complexion. It’s simple, it’s skin science.

How to use

Spray onto a cotton pad and wipe down the skin to remove excess dirt, or spray directly onto the face to tighten pores and hydrate! You should use toner after washing your face and before you apply moisturiser.

Remember!

It is important to avoid toners that contain alcohol. It can disrupt how your skin produces it's natural oils, which can cause skin to become unbalanced and can lead to irritated and dry skin.
